An example of innovative instructional leadership was my participation in Level Up Calgary Season’s One and Two. I helped design and facilitating engaging virtual learning experiences that empowered educators and students in Rocky View Schools to explore interdisciplinary curriculum learning through Minecraft: Education Edition. I developed resources, led interactive in-class and online sessions for both K-12 students and staff that scaffolded digital skill development, modelled effective classroom integration, and supported cross-curricular planning aligned with provincial outcomes. By fostering a collaborative learning environment, I helped build educator capacity, encouraged innovative teaching practices, and promoted inclusive digital citizenship across diverse learning contexts.
What was the interdisciplinary project?
In Season 2, The City of Calgary partnered with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), Microsoft Canada, and the Calgary Public Library to deliver Level Up Calgary Season 2: Achievement Unlocked. Calgary Catholic School Division (CCSD) and Rocky View Schools (RVS) also joined in the Challenge, bringing close to 30,000 student participants, a total of 72 finalists viewed by the judges, resulting in a total of 19 winners.
For Season 3, The City of Calgary partnered again with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), Microsoft Canada, and the Calgary Public Library to deliver Level Up Calgary Season 2: Achievement Unlocked. Rocky View Schools (RVS) students had input on two important downtown locations: Haultain Park in Downtown’s Beltline neighbourhood, and the Green Line 4th Street Station in The Culture + Entertainment District. This season, they focusing on crafting safe, accessible, and inclusive public spaces to celebrate diversity, foster equity, and promote unity for all Calgarians. Students researched, planned, and designed their ideas in Minecraft Education. They then recorded two minute videos to persuade the audience why their video met the design credentials. This supported an authentic and real life application of learning.
Winners from RVS were recognized at a ceremony in Calgary on June 11, along with winners from the Calgary Board of Education.
